2 CE Seminar for Professionals
Navigating the Unknowns of Pregnancy:
Food, Fear, Body Image, and Eating Disorders
Presented by: Heather Maio, PsyD
Assistant Vice President of Clinical & Admission Services, The Renfrew Centers
& Clinical Director, The Renfrew Center of Florida
For many women, pregnancy is a joyous time when the body provides for the unborn child and excitement builds for the pleasures, challenges and triumphs that come with bringing new life into the world. Yet, for others, the experience of being pregnant may be terrifying. The “unknowns” of their weight, pressures to keep fit and loss of control over their ever-changing body often create emotional distress culminating in the development of eating disorder behaviors during and after pregnancy.
In this workshop, we will explore the issues specific to pregnancy, body image and disordered eating. Biopsychosocial factors that contribute to the development and maintenance of disordered eating during and after pregnancy will be examined and strategies for clinicians to provide support and care to pregnant women and their loved ones will be provided.
