The Renfrew Center of Nashville specializes in the treatment of anorexia, bulimia, binge eating disorder, and related mental illnesses. Programming consists of a comprehensive range of services including day treatment, intensive outpatient and group therapy.

Meet Our Clinical Leaders:

Laurie Cooper, PsyD, is the Regional Assistant Vice President and Site Director at The Renfrew Center of Nashville. Dr. Cooper received her Doctorate of Psychology from Baylor University and completed her Postdoctoral Fellowship at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences. An Adjunct Assistant Professor of Psychology at Vanderbilt University, her clinical and administrative experience includes 25 years of care in outpatient and intensive-care settings treating eating disorders, women’s issues and child and adolescent assessment/intervention. Dr. Cooper is a frequent lecturer on the topics of best practices in the treatment of eating disorders and helping mothers and daughters be authentic and resilient. She is a member of the Academy of Eating Disorders, National Eating Disorders Association, Eating Disorders Coalition of Tennessee, The Nashville Psychotherapy Institute, RenewED, and the National Academy of Professional Women.

Becky Mehr, MS, RDN, CEDRD, LDN, is a Registered Dietitian at The Renfrew Center of Nashville and Outpatient Nutrition Director for The Renfrew Centers. Ms. Mehr received her Bachelor’s degree in Dietetics from Lipscomb University and her Master’s degree in Clinical Nutrition from the University of Memphis. Her background experience covers a wide range of settings and populations including providing medical nutrition in an acute care facility and working with individuals with developmental disabilities.

Relationships in Recovery: Connecting to Yourself, Relating to Others

One important element in successfully navigating recovery is identifying your true self, formerly hidden by your eating disorder. This step will give you the ability to foster positive and supportive relationships and set boundaries when necessary.

Join us for an enlightening and supportive workshop that will provide strategies for assessing the quality of your current relationships as well as expressing your needs and gratitude to those you depend upon for support.

In this workshop, you will:

  • Understand the different types of relationships and why relationships are so valuable in recovery
  • Prioritize your values to determine what is important to you
  • Recognize which relationships are helpful or harmful to your recovery
  • Learn techniques for setting boundaries

The Renfrew Center of Nashville offers the following groups:

The Emotional Eating Group provides a safe and supportive environment in which women can explore the emotional, behavioral and interpersonal factors influencing their eating behaviors as well as their feelings, thoughts and beliefs about their bodies. While focusing on the underlying issues of emotional and binge eating, participants gain the skills and confidence to tolerate a range of internal emotional experiences without resorting to the use of eating disorder symptoms. This group also addresses issues related to family, work, relationships, and phase of life struggles so that individuals can explore lifestyle changes that promote recovery.

This group is led by Laurie Cooper, PsyD.

Time: 5:45 pm - 7:00 pm
Location: The Renfrew Center of Nashville
Cost: $60 (may be covered by insurance depending upon the plan benefits)

The Aftercare Group is for adolescent girls and women struggling to overcome anorexia, bulimia or disordered eating patterns involving binge eating or restricting. Led by a licensed clinician, the group provides a safe atmosphere where group members explore eating disorder triggers as well as issues concerning body image, relationships, work and school. One weekly group per month will focus on nutrition.

This group is for patients that do not require a higher level of care such as Day Treatment or IOP.
